Implants with locator abutments are used to secure and retain the appliance. There is typically a metal housing that is embedded into the denture on the surface that faces the gum tissue. A replaceable plastic gasket rests in the housing and fits like a snap fixture onto the locator abutment. These gaskets have to be replaced periodically.
